Technical Abstract:
Some strawberry growers are interested in conducting cultivar evaluation experiments on their farms. Advantages of these on farm trials include: knowing what cultivars of interest perform best with the grower's soil type, microclimate, and production system as opposed to a location several counties away; being able to get customer feedback on new cultivars before planting them to large fields; and being able to help supply important information to researchers around the area. Judging the value of new cultivars in comparison with others requires unbiased evaluation that can only come with following the 'three R's': replicate, randomize, and repeat. Other considerations should include the type of material to be evaluated (cultivars or breeder selections), plot size, harvest method, quality evaluation, data analysis, and performance evaluation.
