Interpretive Summary: This is a review on fish vaccinology and highlights some of the factors that influence the outcome of a successful fish vaccine. A patent and licensed modified live vaccine against Edwardsiella ictaluri will be used to illustrate how its efficacy may be influenced by some of these unique factors of fish vaccinology.

Technical Abstract: Vaccination is a safe and effective means to prevent disease and to increase productivity and profitability of farmed fish. Vaccines will be the prime prophylactic measure of the future due to rapidly developing advances in fish vaccine technology and producer acceptance. The ability of the fish industry to provide a continuous supply of fish protein depends on both proper biosecurity and vaccination strategies to significantly reduce the risk of infectious diseases. The efficacy of a vaccine is influenced by a variety of factors that must be considered in the development of a vaccine strategy for fish. The objective of this review is to highlight some of the factors that influence the outcome of a successful fish vaccine. A patented and licensed modified live vaccine against Edwardsiella ictaluri will be used to illustrate how its efficacy may be influenced by some of these unique factors germane to fish vaccinology.
