Technical Abstract: Sugar content, root weight, and sugar yield are the primary criteria for sugarbeet variety performance. This book chapter reviews the genetic, biochemical, and physiological determinants of breeding and selecting sugarbeet for improved variety performance, as well as the biological limitations to increasing sugar yield.
