Technical Abstract: The invention relates to a new and distinct variety of peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) tree which is named Gulfcrest. This new variety produces highly colored, clingstone, non-melting yellow flesh fruit which are suitable for the fresh market. Gulfcrest matures a few days after Flordacrest, approximately midway between Flordaking and June Gold, in early to mid-May in southwest Geogia. Gulfcrest retains fruit firmness at the full flavor, tree ripe stage for up to 10 days on the tree. Fruit shape is round with a recessed tip. Leaves have small globose glands. Tree is adapted to a semi-mild winter climate, requiring approximately 525 chill units (cu). Flowers are non-showy and pink. Best adaptation will be in areas where both Flordaking and June Gold have been grown successfully. Chief advantages of Gulfcrest over its nearest rival, Flordacrest, are its superior cropping reliability, shape, attractiveness, red blush, eating quality, and especially firmness (due to its non-melting flesh).
