Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Despite low add on (1 to 3%), poly (ethylene oxide), PEO and poly(propylene oxide), PPO dibromides were recently shown to raise the tensile and tear strengths of mercerized print cloth by 12 and 36 %, respectively [Prevost et al., Polymer Preprint, 2003, 44, (2), 888-889]. This is entirely unlike the behavior of small crosslinking agents that lower tensile and tear strengths when covalently bonded to cotton fabrics. In this paper we will discuss new formulations that improve polymer add on of the dibromo polymers. In addition, we will compare the tensile and tear behaviors of fabrics when treated with the dibromo polymers and terminal diepoxy-methallyl ethers of PEO and PPO.
