Interpretive Summary: True flies are the most economically important group of insects, as the order contains mosquitoes and other medical pests, as well as severe agricultural pests such as fruit flies and gall midges. This paper presents a key to all known families of flies from Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America. A chapter in a manual of the flies of Central America, this work will enable quarantine workers, veterinarians, and others concerned with flies to identify these insects. Technical Abstract: A key to the families of Diptera from the Neotropical Region is presented. The geographic scope is limited to the tropical regions of South America, excluding areas such as Chile and the high Andes. All of Mexico is included. |
