Citation: Yeh, H., Klesius, P.H. 2003. Cloning and sequencing of channel catfish hemoglobin- beta cdna. Genbank. AY462104. Technical Abstract: Beta-Hemoglobin gene of channel catfish, ictalurus punctatus, was cloned and sequenced. Total RNA from head kidneys was isolated, reverse transcribed and amplified. The sequence of the channel catfish Beta-hemoglobin gene consists of 600 nucleotides. Analysis of the nucleotide sequence reveals one open reading frame, encoding 148 amino acids with a calculated molecular mass of 16.3 Da. Overall amino acid similarity to fish sequences is 60 - 85%. This amino acid sequence will provide information to the following audience: (1)Fish physiologist-for further studying the relationship between environment conditions and adaptation, (2)Meat scientist-for comparative studying the relationship of the amount of hemoglobin lipid oxidation in storage of muscle foods, and (3)Molecular evolutionist.
