Technical Abstract: Phytophthora infestans oospores have been found in different soil types in central Mexico. While genotypic diversity has been extensively studied in foliar populations, soil borne populations have not been characterized. Genotypic diversity was compared between P. infestans populations from soil borne vs. aerial inoculum according to mating type and isozyme genotype (Gpi and Pep). Isolates were obtained from soil (oospore populations) and diseased foliage collected in potato fields in central Mexico. Both mating types were present in all populations, but the A1 mating type was more frequent in soil populations. Frequencies of multilocus genotypes varied among regions and between soil borne and foliar inoculum from the same area. Novel genotypes were found in all soils. Preliminary data confirms the hypothesis that genotypic diversity is higher in populations derived from oospores than from aerial inoculum.
