Technical Abstract: This fact sheet discusses how animal producers can incorporate the phytase enzyme into their feeding program to reduce the amount of P added to diets. In brief, the mode of action, the applications and limitations and the effectiveness of dietary phytase are included. A brief discussion of potential costs of implementing this practice is also included. This fact sheet will be included with many others that will be used to address best management practices to reduce P losses to surface waters. Through a national distribution of this collection of fact sheets, the impact of this work will be to educate producers, state and local extension personnel and other technical service providers on the impact of using dietary phytase to reduce potential pollution from animal manure applications.
