Interpretive Summary: Fusarium wilt of peas is an important disease of peas that is controlled through the use of genetic resistance. A single dominant gene confers resistance to this disease. We have located the gene that confers resistance to the disease on the pea gene map. The location of the gene for resistance to Fusarium wilt of peas is important because it clarifies the pea map and allows pea breeders to use this knowledge in the selection for resistance to the wilt in early hybrid generations. In this study we also provide information about the location of another gene, Td in the pea genome. The information in this paper should be of value to pea breeders in their effort to develop varieties of peas with improved disease resistance.

Technical Abstract: Resistance to fusarium wilt of peas (Pisum sativum L.) caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. pisi race 1 is conferred by a single dominant gene, Fw. The gene was located in the pea genome by analyzing progenies from crosses involving genetic markers in all pea linkage groups. Reaction of the progenies to race 1 of fusarium wilt was determined by field screening in a severely infested plot. Fw was shown to be located on linkage group III, and about 13 map units from Lap-1 and b. Close linkage was also found between Td, leaflet dentation, and Fw, indicating that Td and Fw are both located in the same linkage group. These results differ from previous reports which have placed Td and Fw on linkage group IV. The location of Fw on linkage group III in the proximity of Td, Lap-1 and b may provide an indirect selection criterion for pea breeders.
