Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A reduction in runoff phosphorus (P) losses from manure treated fields has been reported after surface applications of water treatment residuals (WTRs). An alternative management strategy to reduce off-site P movement may be to increase the soil's P sorption capacity by incorporating WTRs into soil. Our objective was to determine the inorganic-P sorption maximum values (Pmax) for two WTRs, a Norfolk soil and for soil and WTRs mixtures. The two WTRs and soil alone had Pmax values that ranged between 85 and 175 and less than l mg P/g, respectively. Mixing WTRs into soil (1 to 10% w/w) increased their Pmax values several-fold (between 2 to 9 mg P/g). Our results suggest that WTR incorporation into sandy soils can potentially be a chemical-based management practice to reduce off-site P transport.
