Interpretive Summary: 'HiFi' spring oat (Avena sativa L.) was developed at the North Dakota Agricultural Experimentation in cooperation with USDA-ARS and released by the Agricultural Experiment Station - North Dakota State University. It is a high yielding cultivar with high test weight, low hull content and high mill yield. It is also highly resistant to rusting diseases. The name 'HiFi' connotes the high soluble fiber content of the grain. It is adapted to North Dakota, and adjacent regions of Minnesota and South Dakota.

Technical Abstract: Technical Abstract: 'HiFi' spring oat (Avena sativa L.) was developed at the North Dakota Agricultural Experimentation in cooperation with USDA-ARS and released by the Agricultural Experiment Station - North Dakota State University. HiFi was developed from a series of crosses with the pedigree Amagalon/M23//RL3038//'Otana'/3/'Froker/RL3038//RL3038/'Hudson'/5/MN78142/4/W80-20/3/Hudson/'Lang'//'Dal' with the final cross made in 1993. HiFi has been evaluated for grain yield in North Dakota since 1995. Based on 23 location/years, HiFi is high yielding and flowers four days later than the oat ciltivar 'Jerry'. It has low hull content and high experimental mill yield. HiFi also has excellent crown rust and stem rust resistance. The name HiFi in intended to connote the high soluble fiber content of the grain and is adapted to North Dakota and adjacent regions of South Dakota and Minnesota.
