Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Field research was initiated to provide information on the use of a new one row research harvester built by USDA for gathering agronomic data and to evaluate materials for incorporation into new germplasm releases. Thirty-nine entries were tested, including recent commercial hybrids, new ARS releases, legacy germplasm rescued from low-quality storage conditions, and potential releases. In general, plot weights with the new one-row harvester were higher than those observed with a traditional two-row harvester. The two row harvester showed more variability between replications due to differences in inter-row competition between one- and two-row plots. In previous years agronomic trials have focused nearly exclusively on developing high sucrose, smooth root germplasm. These activities have been successful. Disease resistance in the lines for Eastern growing conditions is generally good with the exception of Rhizoctonia resistance. USDA-ARS Ft. Collins Rhizoctonia resistant releases were evaluated for their potential role as donors of this trait to future releases, and disease resistant selections from within the existing releases may show improved performance. Seed increases in 2001 of some accessions with high vigor after 17 years in suboptimal storage showed potential as donors for increased dry matter accumulation.
