Interpretive Summary: Microorganisms produce a wide variety of polysaccharides, and many of these have been used in food and industrial applications. We found that a microbe isolated from the gut of cattle produces a polysaccharide that contains unique sugars. In the current research, we determined the structure of this polysaccharide. This information will be useful in evaluating possible uses for this material which can be produced from agricultural commodities.

Technical Abstract: The extracellular polysaccharide produced by Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens strain H10b, when grown under strictly anaerobic conditions with glucose as carbohydrate source, has been studied by chemical and spectroscopic techniques. The results demonstrate that the polysaccharide consists of hexasaccharide repeating units: Gal-Gal-Glc-carboxyethyl Glc-Gal-carboxyethyl Gal. The isolated polysaccharide was found to be ~65% acetylated at 0-2 of the 3-O-[(S)-1-carboxyethyl]-beta-D-Glcp residue. The absolute configuration of the 1-carboxyethyl groups was determined by circular dichroism.
