Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The mitochondrial genome of cucumber is unique because of its huge size, paternal transmission, and accumulation of short dispersed repeats. Passage of cucumber inbred line B through cell cultures induces somaclonal variation. Some of the regenerated plants are segregating plants with a strong mosaic (MSC) phenotype on cotyledons and leaves. The MSC phenotype shows paternal transmission and its genetic bases of independently derived MSC mutant lines are unknown. Genetic experiments eliminated paternal imprinting. Hybridizations of mitochondrial probes to DNAs of MSC16, wild type cucumbers, and wild-type lines regenerated from tissue cultures showed that rearrangements occur in mitochondrial genome of line MSC16.
