Technical Abstract:
Graft copolymers of starch and polyacrylamide (PAAm) were prepared by reactive extrusion using a corotating twin screw extruder. Parameters investigated include screw speed, total feed rate, moisture content, temperature, and monomer content. In general, monomer conversions were 80% or greater with grafting efficiencies of 60% or more. PAAm molecular weights were several hundred thousand (g/mol), except in cases of high screw speed or high moisture content. Conversion, PAAm molecular weight, and grafting efficiency increased as the moisture content during extrusion decreased.
