Apiocerid flies (family Apioceridae) are poorly known, but their predaceous larvae may help control insect pests including other flies. The information contained in this publication summarizes the taxonomy of the species that occur in Mexico and Central America. A chapter in a comprehensive manual of the flies of Central America, this work will enable scientists, quarantine workers, veterinarians, and others concerned with flies to identify these insects. Technical Abstract: The family Apioceridae is reviewed at the generic level for Central America, based on literature reviews and original research. A single genus occurs in southern Mexico, and may extend into Central America. A synopsis of knowledge of the family is presented as well as identification aids and figures. |
