Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Various commodity chemicals such as fuel ethanol, lactic acid, calcium magnesium acetate, 1,3-propanediol, polyhydroxyalkanoates, sugar alcohols, amino acids, and industrial enzymes are produced by fermentation. In this presentation, recent progress in process development and scale up for the production of these commodity chemicals by fermentation will be reviewed. Our research dealing with the factors affecting the production of certain commodity chemicals such as ethanol, lactic acid, mannitol, xylitol, 2,3-butanediol, and industrial enzymes by fermentation will be described. The problems and prospects of cost-effective commodity chemical production by fermentation and future directions of research will be presented.
