Technical Abstract: Vegetable oils, their derivatives, and glycerin represent renewable raw materials that are firmly established components in many industrial products. Their use continues to be of interest to many researchers and the development of approaches to functionalize these compounds to derive oleochemicals with unique chemical and physical properties is integral in extending the uses obtainable from these renewable materials. Organic carbonates are one such derivative obtainable from these renewable raw materials. This work examines the preparation and characterization of various organic carbonates derived from renewable raw material sources. These carbonates were prepared in good yields via dialkyl carbonate interchange reactions between the hydroxyl moieties contained in these materials and diethyl carbonate using basic catalysts. Physical properties such as viscosity and pour point will be presented.
