Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: DNA sequence of the yedK gene within the tabtoxin biosynthetic gene cluster of Pseudomonas syringae (GenBank accession number AY082803). The predicted gene product of the P. syringae gene is similar to the yedK gene of Escherichia coli (accession:NP 288392) and the 'Gyfsy-2' prophage in Salmonella typhimiurium (accession: NP 460027). The gene also contains significant identity to similar gene in Pseudomonas syringae pv. pisi (accession:CAB96973). Members of this gene family are found widely distributed across taxa of all three Domains. The presence of the a phage associated gene next to the tabtoxin biosynthetic cluster, strongly suggest a mechanism for the horizontal transfer and integration of the tabtoxin pathogenicity island. This mechanism entails the transfer of the region via wide-host range plasmids or bacterial conjugation followed by the integration of the entire tabtoxin biosynthetic cluster as a unit using a phage-like integrase.
