Interpretive Summary: We report the registration of A 339, MAR 1, MAR 2, and MAR 3, four common dry beans with broad resistance to the angular leaf spot and anthracnose diseases. These diseases are major production constraints of the common bean worldwide. All four lines also have resistance to the bean common mosaic virus and a moderate level of tolerance to low soil fertility. A 339 has small, cream-colored seeds, MAR 1 has medium-sized cream-speckled-colored seeds, MAR 2 has cream-striped-colored seeds, and MAR 3 has small pinto-colored seeds. Scientists developing improved common bean cultivars will use this information.
Technical Abstract: We are registering the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris.) germplasm lines A 339, MAR 1, MAR 2, and MAR 3 with broad resistance to angular leaf spot (ALS, caused by Phaeoisariopsis griseola) and anthracnose (caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum). These lines were developed at the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT), Cali, Colombia. All four genotypes also have I gene for resistance to the Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV). In addition, all lines possess a moderate level of tolerance to low soil fertility. ALS and anthracnose are major production constraints of common bean worldwide. A 339 was derived from a single cross interracial population: MX 203=`Ojo de Lievre' (G 2910)/Brasil 2 (G 3807). A 339 has small (21 g 100/seed-weight) cream-colored seed, white flower, and a Type III growth habit. MAR 1 was developed from a multiple-parent interracial population: BZ 5845 =BAT 85//A 83/XAN 112///`Catu'//A 442/`Higuerillo'. MAR 1 has medium-sized (28 g 100/seed-weight) cream-speckled-colored seed, purple flowers, and a Type III growth habit. MAR 2 was derived from a single-cross population: AR 3782=A 252/Ecuador 299. MAR 2 has cream-striped-colored seed, white flowers, and a Type III growth habit. A single dominant gene that is linked in coupling phase with random amplified polymorphic DNA marker OPE-04 at 5.8 cM controls the ALS resistance in MAR 2 to race 63. MAR 3 was developed from a single-cross population: MX 5042=A 321/Higuerrillo.MAR 3 has a Type III growth habit, small pinto-colored seed, and white flowers.
