Interpretive Summary: We are reporting the registration of EMGOPA 201- Ouro, a dry bean that produces high yields and is resistant to some of the most destructive and widespread diseases of the common bean in the United States and the world. EMGOPA 201- Ouro has resistance to the following diseases: bean common mosaic virus, common bacterial blight and powdery mildew. EMGOPA 201- Ouro is also moderately resistant to the angular leaf spot disease and it is resistant to some, but not all, strains of the pathogens that cause the anthracnose and rust diseases of beans. EMGOPA 201- Ouro was among the first beans developed through plant breeding for resistance to several diseases. EMGOPA 201- Ouro was developed at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) based in Cali, Colombia. This bean produces small, opaque, light beige-colored seeds. This information will be useful to scientists developing and working with improved common bean cultivars.

Technical Abstract: Common bean cultivar EMGOPA 201- Ouro is among the first common bean cultivars developed by breeding, with resistance to multiple diseases. EMGOPA 201- Ouro has the I gene for resistance to the Bean common mosaic virus. It is also moderately resistant to angular leaf spot (caused by Phaeoisariopsis griseola), resistant to five races of the anthracnose pathogen (Colletotrichum lindemuthianum), common bacterial blight (caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli), some races of the bean rust pathogen Uromyces appendiculatus, and powdery mildew (caused by Erysiphe polygoni). EMGOPA 201- Ouro was tested under the experimental designation `A 295' which was developed from the single cross population BZ 73 with the pedigree A 30/Aete 1/37 at the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT), Cali, Colombia. The reaction of A 30 to diseases is similar to those of EMGOPA 201- Ouro. Aete 1/37 has the I gene for resistance to BCMV. EMGOPA 201- Ouro seems to derive its resistance to most of the diseases from A 30. The pedigree method of selection was practiced in the population BZ 73 from F2 to F8. EMGOPA 201-Ouro has an indeterminate growth habit Type III with a small vine. It has small (23 g/100-seed weight), opaque, light beige-colored seeds. Because it is partially sensitive to a long photoperiod it may flower and mature late (taking >90 d) in the United States and Canada.
