Technical Abstract: On average, K2SO4 extracts only 56% as much C as water below pH 7.7, but 23% more C above pH 7.7 in unfumigated soil. Soil microbial biomass estimates using CFE with 0.5 M K2SO4 were 70% lower than with water when soil pH<7.7, but 29% greater when soil pH>7.7. Soil pH and ionic strength of extractant interact, indicating that CFE for soil microbial biomass C is soil pH dependent.
