Technical Abstract: Sustainable management has three critical elements: ecological health and resilience, economic vitality, and social value and equity. To address the issues of sustainability, we examine strategies for conducting research that not only increases our scientific knowledge base and solves problems but also informs policy and aids managers in making decisions that are economically and environmentally sound. The potential impact of biosolids on soil quality and subsequent environmental issues are discussed. We conclude suggesting that sustainability and research goals could be linked by simply taking the additional time to consider critical questions that stakeholders might ask.
