Interpretive Summary: Larvae of a family of very large flies bore in trunks of trees in
Mexico and Central America. Some species attack only fallen trees, but others infest otherwise healthy trees, such as oaks in Tamaulipas, northern Mexico. The information contained in this publication summarizes the species that occurs south of the United States, and an identification key and illustrations are provided. This is a chapter in a manual on the flies of Central America, a large, comprehensive book that covers the entire fauna of Central America, several thousand genera of flies. This work will enable quarantine workers, veterinarians, and others concerned with
flies to identify these insects.
Technical Abstract:
The family Pantophthalmidae is reviewed at the generic level for Central America, based on literature reviews and original research. A key to both genera is presented, modified from existing keys. A synopsis of knowledge of the family is presented as well as short treatises on each of the 2 Central American genera.
