Technical Abstract: In the National Microbial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) for Enteric Bacteria participating state and local health departments send every tenth human Salmonella submitted to their laboratory to CDC. Also, the USDA tests chilled carcasses and other raw meat and poultry products, including ground beef, collected at federally inspected slaughter or processing facilities for Salmonella. Salmonella isolates received at CDC and USDA are tested using identical methods for susceptability to 17 antimicrobial agents. We defined the outbreak strain as having an indistinguishable PFGE pattern and the same multidrug resistance pattern.
