Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Multi-trait selection of quantitatively inherited traits/loci (QTL) is an important objective in cucumber breeding programs. Some impediments to multi-trait marker assisted selection (MAS) (i.e., source/sink relationships) and the theoretical basis and strategy for overcoming such impediments are presented. A QTL analysis was accomplished in which 171 recombinant inbred lines (RIL) were evaluated and QTL for earliness (days to first harvest), days to anthesis, sex expression, multiple lateral branching (MLB), and fruit length (length:diameter ratio, L:D) were placed on a genetic linkage map consisting of 131 markers of various types. Results suggest there are strong negative and positive correlations between the traits evaluated. Many of the QTL associated with the traits were placed on Linkage Groups 1 and 6. The map position of QTL and correlations among four traits were considered for the development of a breeding strategy for multi-trait selection of high-yielding germplasm. This recurrent selection strategy is described, and a plan for the evaluation of its efficacy is accomplished by comparing MAS with phenotypic selection.
