Interpretive Summary: This book chapter represents an up-to-data synthesis of knowledge on the evolutionary relationships among the fungal kingdom. The characteristics and life history of all four major groups of Fungi are covered at an introductory level, including illustrations and/or photographs of key characters and generalized life cycles. This book chapter will benefit scientists and the general public interested in the evolution and reproductive biology of the Fungi.

Technical Abstract: An up-to-date synthesis of molecular evolutionary relationships within the kingdom Fungi is presented. Key characteristics and life histories of the four phyla of Fungi are covered at an introductory level. Generalized life cycles and key morphological characters are illustrated for the Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Zygomycota and Chytridiomycota. An additional section is presented on fungi and geological time.
