Technical Abstract: The gametophyte produces gametes which fuse to form the zygote. The zygote develops into the sporophyte. The sporophyte has no germline, but a few specialized cells on the sporophyte undergo meiosis and the meiotic products form the gametophyte. If the megasporangia and microsporangia structures on the sporophyte are morphologically distinct, the plant is termed heterosporous, while if only one type of spore is formed, the plant is termed homosporous.
