CHARACTERIZATION OF POPULATIONS OF PHYTOPHTHORA INFESTANS FROM SOIL AND FOLIAGE COLLECTED IN CENTRAL MEXICO. XIV INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF THE MEXICAN PHYTOPATHOLOGICAL SOCIETY. P 125. 2002.

Technical Abstract: Oospores of P. infestans were detected in different soils from Central Mexico, but it is unknown whether these populations are as genetically diverse as foliar populations that have been extensively studied in the Toluca Valley. Soils and infected leaflets were sampled from three locations in Central Mexico where potatoes are planted. Samples were collected in Huiloapan and La Cabaña located in Santa Catarina del Monte, Municipio de Texcoco, Edo. de Mexico and the Toluca Valley. A bioassay was used to obtain soilborne isolates. A total of 230 isolates were characterized for mating type, isozyme genotype at the Pep and Gpi loci, and resistance to mefenoxam. Both foliar and soilborne populations showed genotypic diversity, but the frequency of multilocus genotypes varied between populations. Both mating types were found in soil and foliage derived populations, but unique isozyme genotypes were found in soil derived populations not found in foliar populations.
