Technical Abstract: Ion adsorption in soils has been described using both empirical and chemical models. Empirical adsorption isotherm equations will be presented and their limitations discussed. Chemical surface complexation models and their applications to soils will be introduced. Advantages and limitations of surface complexation models will be discussed.
