PHYTOPHTHORA IPOMOEAE, A NEW HOMOTHALLIC SPECIES CAUSING LEAF BLIGHT ON IPOMOEA LONGIPEDUNCULATA IN THE TOLUCA VALLEY OF CENTRAL MEXICO. MYCOLOGICAL RESEARCH. 106(7):848-856. 2002.

Interpretive Summary: The Toluca Valley is the center of diversity of several species of Phytophthora including including P. infestans infecting potatoes and P. mirabilis infecting a native host plant (Mirabilis jalapa). A Phytophthora species was found on blighted foliage of Ipomoea longipedunculata, a morning glory species native to the highlands of central Mexico. Based on host range, morphology, allozymes, mitochondrial DNA haplotype and rDNA sequences it is concluded that a new Phytophthora species, P. ipomoeae, is the causal agent. This work establishes the existence of a new oomycete species.
