Technical Abstract: An outbreak of virus symptoms in the San Juan Valley of the southeastern part of the Dominican Republic during the 1999/2000 dry bean production season was studied. The virus was determined by USDA-ARS at Prosser, WA, to be the NL-8 strain of bean common mosaic necrosis virus. The virus was observed to be seed-borne, and was oddly found in fields planted with the resistant cultivar Arroyo Negro. It was later determined that Arroyo Negro was contaminated with black seeds susceptible to the virus. The susceptible seeds were probably imported for commercial consumption, but some were planted and eventually made their way into seed production. The level of infection and wide spread yield loss across the southeastern production region has increased steadily since inception of the problem in 1999. Identification of the strain has informed breeders which resistance genes to deploy in the Dominican Republic to combat this emerging disease problem.
