Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The presentation will consist of three parts: 1) a review of commercially available systems for sorting agricultural products; 2) a background discussion on the advantages and challenges involving the development of sorting machines using other technologies such as machine vision, acoustics, and near infrared spectral signals; 3) examples of some recently developed, but not yet commercially available, high speed sorting machines. These applications include inspecting pistachio nuts for various shell stains by machine vision, pistachio nuts for closed shells by acoustics and almond kernels for embedded shell fragments by imaging transmitted light. All of these sorting systems have throughput rates of 400 pounds per hour. Applications of these technologies for the sorting of whole cereal grains will be discussed as well.
