Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Several accessions of moco cottons from Brazil contained more than 90% of the gossypol in seed or flower petals as the (+)-enantiomer. The high percentages of (+)-gossypol were backcrossed into the cultivar 'Tamcot CAMD-E' using HPLC analysis to determine (+)/(-)-gossypol percentages. Analyses of 20 backcross progeny from each of eight moco parents showed that the high percentage of (+)-gossypol in moco cottons is due to two dominant genes designated +G1 and +G2. A flower petal screen was developed to eliminate most progeny that do not contain both the +G1 and +G2 genes. This procedure allows plants to be used as backcross parents without first waiting for seed production. A secondary screen of seed can be used to confirm the presence of both the +G1 and +G2 genes.
