Interpretive Summary: Meadowfoam is a new oilseed crop with a high percentage of unsaturated oil that is used in personal care products. Unsaturated seed oils can degrade and develop malodors under certain processing and storage conditions. Analysis of vapor samples collected from meadowfoam oils were shown to contain breakdown products of the unsaturated oils. Such analysis provides a rapid method for the determination of oil quality and is beneficial to oil processors and formulators.

Technical Abstract: Meadowfoam (Limanthes alba) is an alternative oil seed crop that finds application in personal care products. Odor development in refined meadowfoam oil can be problematic for processors and formulators. The headspace above refined and deodorized meadowfoam oils were sampled using solid phase microextraction (SPME) and analyzed by gas chromatography with a mass selective detector (GC-MS) to identify volatile compounds. Hexanal, heptanal, octanal, and nonanal were detected in the headspace of a malodorous sample by this analytical method. Additionally, nonanal was observed to accumulate in the headspace of an oil sample stored at 60 C within a four-week period of time.
