Interpretive Summary: Cowpea germplasm line GC-86L-98 (PI 612607) was developed by the USDA, ARS and released in August 2001 because of its resistance to cucumber mosaic virus and blackeye cowpea mosaic virus. Infection of cowpea by these two viruses causes the most serious disease of cowpea. Resistance to cucumber mosaic virus has not previously been reported in cowpea. This germplasm has value as a parent of cowpea cultivars with resistance to stunt. About 1.5 million acres of cowpeas are grown in the U.S. and cowpea stunt can cause as much as 80% loss in yield in some cultivars. Therefore, this germplasm line offers great potential value to the U. S. industry.

Technical Abstract: Cowpea germplasm line GC-86L-98 (PI 612607) was developed by the USDA, ARS in Griffin, GA, and released in August 2001 because of its resistance to cucumber mosaic virus and blackeye cowpea mosaic virus. Infection of cowpea by these two viruses causes the most serious disease of cowpea. Resistance to cucumber mosaic virus has not previously been reported in cowpea. This line has a 105-day maturity, large white seeds, and a round shape. This germplasm has value as a parent of cowpea cultivars with resistance to stunt. Therefore, GC-86L-98 offers great potential value to the U. S. industry.
