Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Fusaric acid is a minor mycotoxin produced by members of the genus Fusarium. Concern about this molecule arises because of evidence indicating tht fusaric acid synergizes the effects of other co-occurring mycotoxins. Numerous reports of fusaric acid production by forma speciales of F. oxysporum and by members of the Gibberella fujikuroi complex can be found. There are far fewer reports however of synthesis of this mycotoxin by the tricothecene-producing Fusarium species or by F. solani and relatives. It appears none the less from available data that production of this molecule is a universal feature of the genus Fusarium. We will present results of a survey of the major lineages of Fusarium for the ability to produce fusaric acid. We are also interrested in factors that promote the production of fusaric acid. Preliminary results indicate that in vitro fusaric acid production by F. verticillioides is influenced by the metal ion concentration in the growth medium. Results will be presented on the effects of different metal ions on fusaric acid production by F. verticillioides
