Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Resistance to some of the most devastating diseases of sugarbeet is quantitatively inherited and includes resistance to Cercospora leaf spot, Aphanomyces black root, and Rhizoctonia root rot diseases. Although the assignment of quantitative trait loci (QTL) to specific chromosomes has been achieved for the genetic resistance of sugarbeet to Cercospora beticola, such an analysis has not yet been reported for resistance to the other two diseases. A collaborative effort involving our laboratory is seeking to identify the location of disease resistance loci in sugarbeet that are both qualitative and quantitative in nature. To this end, sugarbeet populations segregating for qualitative resistance to powdery mildew disease, beet mosaic virus, Erwinia vascular necrosis, root knot nematode, and Rhizomania are being used as the base materials for gene tagging using molecular genetic markers. Additional populations segregating for resistance to Aphanomyces black root and Rhizoctonia root rot are being evaluated for plants possessing extreme resistance and extreme susceptibility. These individuals are being chosen for the detection of candidate QTL contributing to the resistance to these diseases. The priorities and progress of this genetic tagging program will be presented.
