Technical Abstract: The physiology, systematics and ecology of the genera that currently compose the actinobacterial family Actinosynnemataceae is presented. The phylogenetic position of the taxa within this family, including Actinokineospora, Actinosynnema, Lechevalieria, Lentzea, and Saccharothrix, relative to the other genera that make up the suborder Pseudonocardineae is discussed. Methods for isolation, preservation, and characterization are detailed. Biotechnological potential of strains of the genera and species contained within the family is illustrated through a listing of patented products and processes for members to date.
