Technical Abstract: Performance evaluations of breeding lines and cultivars at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center have been conducted in both plasticulture and matted row systems since 1994. Both systems use raised beds 12" high and 28" wide with drip irrigation using 12" emitters down the center of the beds and 2" beneath the soil surface. Evaluations have been conducted without the use of methylbromide or fungicides and only occasional use of pesticide for control of mites, thrips, or aphids. Data recorded in the fall includes plant stand, vigor, runnerring, diseases, and fall flowering. Plant data recorded in the spring includes yield, size, appearance, symmetry, firmness, toughness, flavor, skin color, and flesh color. Although some lines performed equally well in both systems, other performed better in one system or the other. Some lines appeared to perform poorly in plasticulture because of increased incidence or severity of anthracnose. Performance comparisons are presented within maturity class to facilitate selection.
