Interpretive Summary: Until recently, there have been few herbicides that provide effective residual control of troublesome broadleaf weeds and perennial sedges in peanut. A comprehensive review was conducted of newly registered residual herbicides and to define their role for growers in future weed control systems. Data was compiled from over 100 trials conducted from 1990 to 2000 by the University of Georgia, University of Florida, Auburn University, and USDA-ARS. Treatments included Cadre, Strongarm, Valor, and Spartan. A standard treatment of paraquat plus Basagran was applied alone and in combination with the residual treatments. Sicklepod control with Cadre was 86%, 73% with paraquat plus Basagran, and <69% with other treatments. Florida beggarweed control was 90% with Valor, 78% with Strongarm, 72% with Cadre, 76% with Spartan, and 70% with paraquat plus Basagran. Purple nutsedge control was 93% with Cadre, 70% with Spartan, and <69% with other herbicides applied alone. Yellow nutsedge control was 93% with Cadre, 98% with Spartan, 83% with Strongarm, and <69% with Valor and paraquat plus Basagran. Control of other species varied by treatment when herbicides were applied alone. When residual herbicides were applied with paraquat plus Basagran, weed control generally improved. Only Cadre controlled sicklepod >90%, only Valor controlled Florida beggarweed >90%, only Cadre controlled purple nutsedge >90%, only Spartan controlled yellow nutsedge >90%, only Strongarm averaged 90% bristly starbur control, and all herbicides provided good to excellent morningglory control. These data will be used to help advise peanut growers on more cost-effective ways to manage weeds using the new residual herbicides.

Technical Abstract: New residual herbicides have recently been registered for peanut including imazapic, diclosulam, and flumioxazin. Sulfentrazone is currently under registration review for peanut. A comprehensive review was conducted for these herbicides to define their role in future peanut weed control systems. Data was compiled from 100 trials conducted from 1990 to 2000 by the University of Georgia, University of Florida, Auburn University, and USDA-ARS. Treatments included imazapic POST, diclosulam PPI and PRE, flumioxazin PRE, and sulfentrazone PRE. A standard of treatment of paraquat plus bentazon EPOST was applied alone and sequentially with the residual treaments. Sicklepod control with imazapic was 86%, 73% with paraquat plus bentazon, and <69% with other treatments. Florida beggarweed control was 90% with flumioxazin, 78% with diclosulam, 72% with imazapic, 76% with sulfentrazone, and 70% with paraquat plus bentazon. Purple nutsedge control was 93% with imazapic, 70% with sulfentrazone, and <69% with other herbicides applied alone. Yellow nutsedge control was 93% with imazapic, 98% with sulfentrazone, 83% with diclosulam, and <69% with flumioxazin and paraquat plus bentazon. Control of other species varied by treatment when herbicides were applied alone. When residual herbicides were applied with paraquat plus bentazon, weed control generally improved. Only imazapic controlled sicklepod, only flumioxazin controlled Florida beggarweed >90%, only imazapic controlled purple nutsedge >90%, sulfentrazone controlled yellow nutsedge >90%, diclosulam averaged 90% bristly starbur control, and all herbicides provided good to excellent morningglory control.
