Technical Abstract: Sudden death was observed in pigs fed moderately high Mn and Mg-deficient diets. To further investigate the effect of Mn, pigs (n=48) were fed diets in a 3X2 factorial for 10 wks. Low Mg elevated maximum, minimum and average heart rates (P<0.05). Electron microscopy of left ventricle revealed mitochondria more swollen in Mg-deficient pigs fed high versus low Mn. At low dietary Mg, increasing dietary Mn proportionately depressed the Ca content of left ventricle, skeletal, and atrial muscle. Statistical interaction between Mn and Mg occurred where high Mn reduced hematocrit, hemoglobin and increased RDW (P<0.05) in pigs fed high Mg. In conclusion, we hypothesize that Mn replaces Mg during Mg deficiency altering muscle Mg and Ca homeostasis, but is displaced by adequate Mg nutrition.
