Interpretive Summary: Aquatic snipe flies (family Athericidae) include species in the US and Mexico that are blood feeders on man and other animals. The information contained in this publication summarizes the taxonomy of the New World taxa at the generic level with emphasis on those found in Central America. A chapter in a manual of the flies of Central America, this work will enable quarantine workers, veterinarians, and others concerned with biting insect to identify these flies.
Technical Abstract:
The family Athericidae (aquatic snipe flies) is reviewed at the generic level for Central America, based on literature reviews and original research. A key to genera is presented, the first to include all New World genera. A synopsis of knowledge of the family is presented as well as short treatises on each Central American genus.
