Interpretive Summary: Both adults and larvae in the asian longhorned beetle genus Anoplophora have been recently intercepted at ports in the United States. One species, Anoplophora glabripennis know as the Asian longhorned beetle, has been recently established in New York City and Chicago and aggressive eradication efforts are being undertaken to control its spread. This beetle is a major pest of hardwood trees including maples and elms and has the potential to spread throughout the United States. Larvae of this beetle easily can be confused with native species of the same family, and this work presents information that enables their identification. This monograph will be very useful for taxonomists and port identifiers, and others involved with monitoring exotic insect introductions.

Technical Abstract: The Asian longhorned beetles of the genus Anoplophora include 36 currently recognized species, including many of major economic importance in agriculture, forestry, and horticulture. Examination of most of the types and study of the structures (both internal and external) and their variation for adults of all species has enabled decisions which have stabilized species concepts and provided recognition characters for the identification of species. The following four New Combinations are made: Anoplophora albopicta (Matsushita, 1933) New Combination; Anoplophora fruhstorferi (Aurivillius) New Combination; Anoplophora graafi (Ritsema) New Combination; Anoplophora sollii (Hope) New Combination. The following 21 New Synonyms are made: Melanauster granulipennis Breuning, 1938 is a New Synonym of Anoplophora beryllina (Hope); Anoplophora subberyllina Breuning, 1964 is a New Synonym of Anoplophora beryllina (Hope); Calloplophora abbreviata Thomson, 1865 is a New Synonym of Anoplophora chinensis (Forster); Calloplophora malasiaca Thomson, 1865 is a New Synonym of Anoplophora chinensis (Forster); Melanauster perroudi Pic, 1953 is a New Synonym of Anoplophora chinensis (Forster); Melanauster adonis v. nov. vitalisi Pic, 1936 is a New Synonym of Anoplophora davidis (Fairmaire); Anoplophora alboapicalis Chiang, 1951 is a New Synonym of Anoplophora fruhstorferi (Aurivillius); Melanauster nobilis Ganglbauer, 1890 is a New Synonym of Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky); Anoplophora birmanica Hudepohl, 1990 is a New Synonym of Anoplophora grisea Tippmann; Melanauster pirouletii Fairmaire, 1889 is a New Synonym of Anoplophora imitatrix (White); Anoplophora parelegans Chiang, 1981 is a New Synonym of Anoplophora longehirsuta Breuning.
