Technical Abstract: Sound and stable plant resistance to pests theoretically involves multiple genes, which are deployed to attack multiple target sites of pests. Consideration should also be given as to what general functionality the resistance genes have, such as cytotoxins, enzyme inhibitors, or barrier destroyers, and how they can be optimally combined. Practical examples from past and present research will be provided, including single gene sources that provide multifunctional resistance, such as peroxidases.
