Interpretive Summary: Infection with bovine viral diarrhea viruses (BVDV) is a source of significant economic loss by U.S. cattle producers. While BVDV are usually isolated from cattle, they have been isolated from goats, camels, pigs, and llamas. This is the first report of an isolation of BVDV from an alpaca. The BVDV isolated from the alpaca sample was similar to BVDV that have been nisolated from cattle. This report alerts veterinarians to the fact that BVDV may cause reproductive problems in alpaca and that BVDV may be transferred between alpaca and cattle herds.
Technical Abstract: Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a pathogen of cattle but has also been isolated from sheep, goats, llamas, camels, and pigs. The virus is prevalent worldwide and causes a number of diseases in cattle in addition to causing immunosuppression. Here we describe the isolation of a BVDV from a stillborn alpaca (Lama pacos). This appears to be the first report of BVDV isolation from alpaca. Phylogenetic analysis of the 5' UTR sequence generated from the alpaca isolate and sequences generated from BVDV reference strains segregated the alpaca isolate to the BVDV1b subgenotype.
