Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Isoxaflutole (5-cycloprophyl-4-isoxazolyl)[2-(methylsulfonyl)-4- (trifluoromethyl)phenyl]methanone)has been recently registered for use in the U.S. for broad-spectrum grass and leaved weed control in corn. It rapidly degrades to its diketonitrile degradate. Sensitive methods are needed for the simultaneous confirmation and quantitation of both chemicals sin soil and water. Isoxaflutole can be analyzed by both positive and negative electrospray ionization, although a more sensitive analysis is obtained using positive mode. In contrast, the diketonitrile degradate can only be ionized in negative mode. Therefore, in order to simultaneously analyze both chemicals, the ability to rapidly switch ion polarities in order to obtain both positive and negative ion signals is necessary. Although both chemicals are very similar in structure, including having the same molecular ion, use of a C8 column can provide adequate separation of the chemicals. Using LC-ESI-MS, we could analyze both chemicals at levels of 0.1 ppb in soil and water.
