Technical Abstract: At NCAUR we have developed soybean oil-based hydraulic fluids using a novel chemical modification of the fatty acid chains. The modification improved the oxidative stability and low temperature fluidity of the soybean oil. The maximum enhancement of the low temperature fluidity and storage stability was achieved by blending with additives and ester based diluents. Two different formulations were scaled up and sent to Caterpillar Corporation (collaboration in place) for further testing in their equipment. The U.S. Patent Application is in process.
