Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Dithiocarbamates have been analyzed in various matrices by a variety of techniques, which have been either time-consuming, nonselective, insensitive, or a combination of all three. The methods also provided no confirmation of these fungicides. We have successfully used a liquid chromatograph-electrospray-mass spectrometer (LC-ES-MS) for the analysis of fthiram in water. After solid phase extraction of the fungicide from water, a Waters LC-ES-MS was used for the analyses. Without further cleanup, a detection levels of < 0.5 g/L in water was obtained using SIM. This method also unambiguously confirmed the three fungicide in water. Details of the method will be provided and comparison to conventional reversed phase and micellar liquid chromatography with UV detection will made. Applicability of the LC-ES-MS method to other dithiocarbamates will also be discussed.
